The recycling of plastics has gained a lot of attention in recent years. Environmental and social pressure has led to industries that are selling, converting, or using plastics material as packaging to shift to incorporate recycled material. This leads to promising opportunities for plastics recyclers. However, in order to achieve that, there are numerous hurdles that recyclers have to overcome before the material can be utilized in applications with higher quality demand. The waste collection and sorting landscape in Indonesia leads to technical as well as economic challenges for plastics recyclers, amongst many other factors.
Further, with the recent restart in economic activity post COVID lockdown, the upward trend of virgin resin prices, as well as the current global supply chain issues all play a part in the market dynamics of plastics recycling. Overall, plastics recyclers in Indonesia must be better equipped to overcome the current volatile situation as well as grasp the business opportunities that lie ahead.
